THE MIKADO (Fell 200) Black-brown, tan and white hind heels, foaled in 1889 he was 13.2 hands high. Bred by John Watson, of Rotherhope, Alston, Cumberland and owned by Lancelot T. Pickering of, Newhouse Farm, Ongar, Essex.

His second owner was Lord Arthur Cecil, of The Mount, Lymington, Hants.
In Volume 6 of the Polo Pony Society (Fell Section), The Mikado was registered as a stallion by his owner, Lancelot T. Pickering. An extended pedigree noting his descent from the Duke of Devonshire’s Flying Childers (foaled in 1715) and sired by the Darley Arabian (described as “the first great racehorse”), was also given.

“Flying Childers was sire of Marshland Shales, who was sire of Old Grey Shales, who was sire of Shales Merrylegs, who was sire of Old Lingcropper, who was sire of Young Lingcropper, who was sire of Little John Lingcropper, who was sire of Atkinson’s Doll, (see chart, who was dam of Merry John, who was sire of Highland Laddie, who was sire of Dolly Varden, who was dam of The Mikado), and or Flying Childers, who was the sire of Mashland Shales who was the sire of, Old Grey Shales, who was the sire of Old Merry Driver, (see chart, who was the sire of Young Merry Driver, who was the sire of the mare who was dam of Young Perfect, who was the sire of The Mikado.”

Carrying his owner, who weighed twelve stones, The Mikado, on several occasions trotted a mile in under three minutes.
Mr Pickering bred Fell ponies, the mares Lady Alice, foaled 1892 and Doll foaled 1894, were both sired by The Mikado and registered with the Polo Pony Society.
In 1904 at the age of fifteen he was exhibited by his new owner Lord Arthur Cecil at the London Spring Show, of the Polo and Riding Pony Society, in Class 28, “For the Best Mountain or Moorland Pony Stallion,” (there were 14 Entries.) The Mikado won the Second Prize of {\’a3}3.
Captain Joseph Oscar Muntz purchased The Mikado from Lord Arthur Cecil and brought him to Devon.
During 1905 the National Pony Society appointed a committee, with the object of improving the various native breeds. Captain Muntz, was one of the men asked to serve on the committee. The Mikado sired much hardy stock and some prizewinners, shown as registered Dartmoors.
