Love Song was bred by Mrs J. Oscar Muntz in 1918, a bay colt later said to be brown.
If possible Mrs Muntz liked to be with her mares when they gave birth, (many a night was spent in the stables wrapped in her warmest coats), she said a foal’s conformation at this time was very clear and as an accomplished artist she had a very keen eye.
Love Song seemed special and was foaled before Joseph Oscar Muntz was killed in the First World War, in September 1918. He was not raced but none the less was said to be, “very fast”.
Whether Love Song was trained for, or played polo is unknown but he was certainly ridden, especially by Mrs Muntz who always rode side-saddle.
Love Song’s first foals appeared in 1922 when he was four years old. The most successful was Love Shaft, a polo po-ny, winning locally and nationally and owned by Captain G.D. Gouldsmith.
The successes continued and he was soon listed in the General Stud books as a stallion producing “living foals.”
In The National Pony Society Stud Books he appears in the, “List of Polo Pony Stallions Available for Service.”
Mrs Muntz, with shades of Chevalier Ginstrelli, was a romantic at heart, who insisted the mares Love Song was to serve be introduced to him first. They were both placed in adjacent paddocks and were able to meet each other over the fence and in her words, “fall in love.”
As early as 1929 he is thought to have been nominated for, “the sire produce group,” at The London Pony Society’s London Show. Foxhams’s “prize” winning mare Stolen Love, (foaled in 1925), was in the show ring at this time.
By 1934, 1935, 1936 and 1937 he was being entered in the, “sire produce groups,” consistently, some “prize,” winning ponies during these years were Early Love, (a stallion) and mares Glowing Dawn, Love Knot, Silver Ray and Lovely Girl.
In 1938 he won a Gold Medal as a Polo Pony Stallion, sadly later in that year he had a stroke and was destroyed on 1st June 1938, aged twenty years.
He is said to be buried in the grounds of Foxhams.
