BOLD MARCO (a twin, only Bold Marco survived) GSB (Vol.20 p.399) a bay colt, slight spot on nose, and near hind heel white. Foaled in 1901, bred by Mr. W. H. Pawson, of Shandon, Alnwick and entered in the Supplement to Volume 8, (Polo and Riding Pony Stud Book, 1903-1904), by Sir John Barker, of The Grange, Bishop’s Stortford, Herts. He was 14.0 hands high, measured on September 21st, 1903, and registered later as stallion 352.

Bold Marco stood at Primley Farm, Paignton, Devon the property of Messrs W. & H. Whitley.
Volume 15 of the National Pony Society, (1917-1918) tells us that, “Owing to the Royal Agricultural Hall having been taken over by the Government, the Eighteenth Annual Show was held at the Park Paddocks, Newmarket, on the afternoon of March 6th, (1918) . . . . Consequent on a communication from the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries the awards of Premiums to Riding Pony Stallions were not, as in previous years, in the form of Classes at the Show.

It was left to the Society to ascertain from each district the type of stallion considered as most suitable for that district, and if the Society approved of such recommendation and obtained the agreement of the Owner of the Stallions so selected. The Premiums in 1918 were therefore allotted as follows :-
Devon – Messrs W. & H. Whitley’s Bold Marco . . . .
Bold Marco was a successful sire and his progeny won many Prizes at the London, and other Shows, from 1906 until the 1920’s.
He began his career at the Bath and West and Southern Counties Show at Swansea, (May 19th, to 24th, 1904), in the class for, “Pony Stallion above 13.2 and not exceeding 14.2, suitable to get Polo or Riding Ponies . . .” Bold Marco took second prize, being exhibited by his owner Sir John Barker. He was also awarded the Medal of the Polo and Riding Pony Society for the best Stallion or Entire Colt . . . and first prize in the class for Pony, Filly, Colt or Gelding foaled 1901


Bold Marco won many other prizes including:-
1905:
– First Prize, Tunbridge Wells and S.E.C. Agricultural Show, 27th and 28th of July

1908:
– First Prize, London Show of the Polo and Riding Pony Society, (Exhibitor Sir Walter Gilbey, Baront, Elsenham Hall, Essex)

1909:
– First Prize, London Show, (” . . the winner, Bold Marco, was a quality pony, low on the ground and of considerable merit. . . . . .”)

1911:
– First Prize, Devon County Agricultural Show, Newton Abbot May 23rd-25th, (owners Messrs. W. & H. Whitney).

1912:
– Second Prize, Devon County Agricultural Show Plymouth May 14th, to 16th (White Wings taking first place).

1916:
– The Show of the National Pony Society saw Bold Marco taking another prize, “To the Owner of the Sire (registered in the National Pony Stud Book or Supplement) of the Two Best Animals selected from entries in classes 1-9, and 12-16”. The Group by Bold Marco gained first place with Marcia (Supp.1916), and Patrician chestnut mare 4 years old, (both Exhibited by Tresham Gilbey) and from the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries, Premiums to Riding Pony Stallions, in District Class E (South-Western) Dartmoor and Exmoor, Bold Marco was now fifteen years old.

1917:
