TURTLE a bright bay mare with a white star, of unknown age. Bred by Martin Cole of Tetcott, Holsworthy, N. Devon, she was owned by Thomas Yelverton of Manor House, Venn Ottery, Devon.

Thomas Yelverton, described as, “. . . one of the most successful breeders of Hunters and Polo ponies in the County of Devon, and, as a prize-winner, probably heads the list for the county . . . . .”, exhibited Turtle as a Polo Pony Brood Mare, at the Devon and Exeter Horse Show on 17th July, 1907. Turtle took second prize with her foal Love Lock. In due course Turtle and her foal Love Lock arrived at Foxhams, and later she was entered in two classes at The Devon and Exeter Horse Show, of 1908. In the first class, “Pony Brood Mares, not exceeding 14.0 to foal in 1908 or with foal at foot,” she won second prize, and in the second class, “Polo Pony Brood Mare, registered or eligible for registration in the Stud Book,” she took the first prize of £5 and the Silver Medal for best Polo Pony Brood Mare, offered by the Polo and Riding pony Society.
A further prize was won at the, Brentor and Lydford Pony Show on 3rd August, 1908.

Turtle was measured on July 30th 1908, she was 14 hands high, and entered in the Polo and Riding Pony Stud Book Volume 10, (1907-1908) as mare number 1801.
