SILVER STAR was a bay mare with a star, her near fore and hind fetlocks were white, she was foaled in 1894 and bred by Mr G. Hutchings, of Claremont, Paignton, Devon.

Her first owner from 1899 to 1903 was J. Gouldsmith, of Ashton House, Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, who registered her as a polo pony at Hurlingham, (certificate number 029) and in Volume Six of the Polo Pony Society, (1899-1900) under Rule three, (Prize Qualification – All Mares not exceeding 14.2 hands which have won first, second or third Prizes in Polo Classes at any Show shall be admitted without inspection; always provided that they have a certificate from the Secretary of such Show to that effect.)


Some Prizes won by Silver Star at this time were:

1899:
– 1st Hurlingham
– 1st Richmond
– 1st and Champion Crystal Palace
– 1st Lechlade
– 1st Gloucestershire at Cirencester
– 1st Bath Horse Show

1900:
– London Show of the Polo and Riding Society – Class 28, Mares or Geldings (Five years old and upwards). For Polo Ponies and for Ponies suitable for making Polo Ponies, foaled previous to 1896 – Silver Star won a “Premium,” there were twenty seven entries.

1903:
– Ranelagh Polo Club Show, June 20th, Mares likely to breed a Polo Pony; 2nd prize

Sometime during 1903, Silver Star passed into the hands of Miss Standish, of Marwell Manor, Eastleigh, Hampshire. Miss Standish died in 1906. She had two foals during this time both probably by Rupert, a stallion bred by Miss Standish, (Rupert foaled in 1900 was by Rosewater, his dam Queenie by Abeyan and his grandam was Zara by Katerfelto.)


Silver Star continued to win prizes:

1905:
– Bath and West and Southern Counties Show at Nottingham, May 30th-3rd June, Pony Mare not exceeding 14.2 suitable to breed Polo or Riding Ponies in foal or with foal at foot – 2nd prize and “Reserve” for the Silver Medal of the Polo and Riding Pony Society.
– Cardiff Horse Show, September 20th – 21st, Brood Mare suitable for breeding Polo Ponies exceeding 13.2 and not above 14.2 in foal or with foal at foot – 3rd prize
– Knighton Horse Show, 1st September, Brood mares with foal at foot or that have already had a foal in in 1905… calculated to produce good Riding or Polo Ponies… (Open) – 1st prize

1906:
– London Show of The Pony and Riding Society, Class 8, Brood Mares not exceeding 14.2 h.h., with Foal at foot or to foal in 1906 (Served May 18th 1905 by Rupert) – 3rd prize
– Bath and West and Southern Counties Show at Swindon, May 31st-June 5th, Pony Mare… suitable to breed Polo or Riding Ponies… 1st prize


Silver Star now came into the possession of Sir John Barker, she bred five foals for him as follows:

1911 – Bay gelding Quicksilver II (Supp 1911)(Vol.14) ”

1911:

– Bath and West and Southern Counties Show at Cardiff – May 30th – June 5th – Mare . . . . to breed Polo or Riding Ponies

Sir John Barker died on 16th December 1914 and the sale of his estate by order of his Executors took place at The Grange Stud Bishop’s Stortford, on April 16th 1915, (sold by Tattersalls).
At the dispersal sale Mrs J. Oscar Muntz became the fourth and last owner of Silver Star, who now came back to Devon at the age of twenty one, with her 1915 foal, the bay colt Silver Bullet.
