Katerfelto (Legendary)
Quoted from an article in the The Field, dated September 29, 1945 by M.G.S. Best.
…..“You often hear the story of Katerfelto told on Exmoor. By many of the folk he is regarded as a legend, and nothing more, but others think there may be something in it, much the same as they will reply if you ask about the Doones. According to Whyte Melville, who wrote his novel around the horse, Katerfelto was a grey stallion, a perfect little horse, the property of the Sir Thomas Acland of that day, which ran free on the moor. Many were the offers for him, but his owner refused to sell, and he was finally lent to a neighbour who, after keeping him for some time, told Sir Thomas he was dead. But this apparently was not the case, and the little horse sired a numerous stock on the moor. There are very few grey ponies on the moor nowadays. Bay, brown, or dun, each with a mealy nose or muzzle, are those generally seen; but they may also be black or grey, and must have no white markings. The true Exmoor also boasts a wide forehead, short head, small pointed ears, wide nostrils, and large eyes, full and dark, very like those of an Arab.” ……
