EARLY MARKET was a bay mare, with a faint star and near fore and near hind pasterns white, she was foaled in 1920 and bred by T.H. Spry, of Witherdon, Beaworthy, Devon.
In Plymouth, at the 1925 Devon County Agricultural Show, (May 12th to 14th) Early Market was entered by her owner Mrs Joseph Oscar Muntz, in a class for the “Best Unmade Polo Pony, not exceeding 15 hands.” There were twelve entries and Early Market won second prize.

She also won in 1925:
– 1st Yealmton,
– 1st Paignton,
– 1st Brentor and Lydford,
– 3rd Launceston,
– 3rd Tiverton and
– 3rd South Brent.

As mare number, “5224” she was entered in Volume 19, of The National Pony Society, (1925-1927) and when measured on August 20th 1925, was fourteen and a half hands high.
At the Hurlingham Club Show, on June 4th and 5th 1926, now the property of Major A.G.F. Isaac, Early Market was entered in a class for “Polo Bred Ponies, that are bona fide Polo Ponies,” she took reserve place.

. . . . ” Early Market is a true example of the National Pony Society’s theory of polo pony breeding, her dam being Market Girl, a brilliant polo pony and the winner of many prizes. Then, to go back another generation, we find that her grandam was the famous Early Dawn of Mr. Tresham Gilbey, a winner of the highest honours in the show-ring and a player in her day in all leading London tournaments. . . . . . To complete the National Pony Society theory, Early Market’s sire was the thoroughbred Yorkshire Hussar . . . . When it is realised that the National Pony Society have such blood in their Stud Book it must make the thoughtful hesitate whether to continue the policy of admitting mares through the Approved Register, or whether the polo section of their Stud Book should now be closed with a view to merging ultimately in the General Stud Book . . . . . .” So says Lieutenant Colonel S.G. Goldschmidt, in an Article for, “Country Life Magazine,” dated 31st August 1935.
